"A sandwich is defined as a mess-free meal where the main components are literally sandwiched by two containing elements."

1. it is never a good idea to use the word you are defining in its definition.
2. having TWO elements is not critical in the sandwich catagory. Submarines have one roll. Nobody is gonna argue they arent sandwiches.

I would reword your defenition as such:

Sandwich: a mess free meal where the components are surrounded by a bread product.

That being said, burritos (or tacos, ect) are surrounded by a tortillia, which is not bread. Lon has it right - unleavened = not bread. Thus, the burrito (or its family) is not a sandwich. The stromboli, which had been surprisingly left on the back burner in this debate, is 100% certified a sandwich. If you have ever eaten a proper stromboli you would agree. It can be eaten while held in both hands, mess free and it is a bunch of stuff surrounded by bread.

You know, I love this site and visit it almost every day but I just happened upon this discussion, even though it is five months old. All I can say is that you guys need to get a life . . . . This is truly silly.

Hogwash. Racisim? Come on now. Different 'races' invented the two different types of food. A burrito is not a sandwich; therefore it must not conform to sandwich standards. A burrito has its contents wrapped. A sandwich has its contents literally 'sandwiched.'

Sandwiches were identified in the 18th century by the English and burritos were identified in the 20th century in Mexico. The two are completely different, hence this discussion.

Racisim? Maybe your blood sugar is low. I suggest a burrito or a sandwich.
