A diner classic, eggs over medium is usually plated alongside some hash browns, buttered toast and a cup of coffee for about $3. And like any good entrée, it’s probably even better as a sandwich.

The fried egg is as simple as it gets, yet infinitely nuanced. Cooked just north of runny, but with a yolk still oozing with creamy, yellow goo; the egg white crisps along the edges but stays pillowy soft in the middle. With each bite, the molten yolk dribbles down through the egg and toast, pooling on the plate for a hearty dip on the next bite.

Tip: make with two egg whites and one yolk for extra heft.

Fractured Prune is a specialty donut shop that got its start in 1976 in Ocean City, Maryland. Since then, the shop has expanded to a franchise operation with stores in seven states including Delaware, Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania and VIrginia. The menu is not only packed with some incredible looking donuts, but also a slew of breakfast sandwiches and wraps that are served all day.

Allison writes us about her favorite indulgence at the Rehoboth Beach location, aptly dubbed “The Prunewich”. We’ll let her explain it:

This sandwich is a breakfast sandwich. It is also heaven. You can purchase this sandwich at a store that is a donut shop and it is, in fact, on a donut. They ingeniously slice one of their made-to-order perfectly light yet rich donuts in half. Between the slices OF THE DONUT, they put a slice of white cheese, egg, and your choice of bacon, ham, or sausage. I am a fan of the ham, myself, and that is the option selected in the picture.

We can only imagine how delicious the combination of sweet donut and savory egg and cheese can be, but we’re not sure it helps us maintain our killer beach bod.

A great beer selection and imaginative menu make Local 44 a welcome addition to the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Spruce Hill. Opened this past January, the bar has been working on perfecting and improving on its existing menu of delicious sandwiches and pub grub.

During a recent visit we found a very intriguing addition to the menu – Reuben Fritters. Although by definition not a sandwich, these delicious bites pay homage to the classic – pastrami and swiss cheese are fried golden in a rye bread batter. The dish is fittingly garnished with sauerkraut and drizzled with Thousand Island dressing.

The ‘Breakfast BLT’ further improves on one of my all time favorite sandwiches: well cooked Lancaster County smoked bacon, lettuce tomato and pepper jack cheese are topped by a monstrous sunny-side up egg that was cooked to perfection. Cutting the sandwich in half sends yolk oozing throughout, gently softening the thick cut toasted sourdough and adding an incredibly delicious texture. The dish is served with housemade chips and horseradish sauce for dipping.

The ‘All-Day Veggie Burger’ consists of two large homemade patties, lettuce and tomato on a bakery fresh brioche bun served with a side of fresh cut fries. This monstrous sandwich is the closest a herbivore will get to a Big Mac and only gets more exciting when adding a combination of the slew of toppings offered including jicama slaw, vegan chili, bleu cheese and more.

Polish off these great eats with a Ayinger Celebrator or one of the 19 other brews on tap or cask and you’ll leave Local 44 with a giant grin and a full stomach.
