Leave it to a Philly girl to show the world what it really means to love sandwiches. Last week, in the critically acclaimed, utterly hilarious 30 Rock, Tina Fey’s character Liz Lemon rattled off the following raison d’etre:

All of humankind has one thing in common: the sandwich. I believe that all anyone really wants in this life, is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich.

But this isn’t the first time Fey has professed her love for the sandwich. In the second season of the show, the cast celebrates “Sandwich Day” when Teamsters bring in sandwiches for the office from a secret shop in Brooklyn. When Liz Lemon realizes her coworkers have devoured her sandwich, all hell breaks loose:

Lemon follows up with:

I don’t know how, but you’re gonna get me another sandwich. Or I’m gonna cut your face up so bad, you’ll have a chin. YOU’LL ALL HAVE CHINS!

Finally, in last night’s episode, Lemon tackles a gigantic sandwich as seen above. So, we salute you Tina Fey, as a lover of sandwiches, we welcome you into our arms; a warm embrace of salty meats, cheeses and condiments.

If you happen to spot sandwiches in TV, movies, or any other media, please contact us, we’d love to hear all about it!

Tony Bourdain is a personal hero of mine; he travels the world to eat some of the most delicious and outrageous things and does it with pure wit and a side of cynicism. A recent episode of Bourdain’s No Reservations took him to Chicago where he bites into the Three Little Pigs sandwich at Silver Palm Restaurant. Created by a bartender on a slow night, the sandwich consists of “smoked ham, a breaded pork cutlet, two strips of bacon, and two fried eggs, blanketed in a thick coat of gruyere, all on a brioche bun.”

Straight from Bourdain’s mouth:

“This is a work of genius, in an evil way…. A two-fisted symphony of pork, cheese, fat, and starch… that sandwich is the greatest sandwich in America. This is the apex of the sandwich-making art… the sandwich that dreams are made of.”

Although not the most creative sandwich in the world, I could see where the combination of those ingredients could be delicious and also potentially stop your heart. Click the via link to see video from the episode.

Last night’s episode of Top Chef presented an Elimination Challenge in which contestants had to prepare the “last meal” chosen by several world famous chefs. Hosea Rosenberg chose Susan Ungaro, President of the James Beard Foundation, whose last dying wish is a plate of Shrimp Scampi with Tomatoes Provencale. While cooking the dish, Hosea makes it clear that he would most definitely not pick this as his last meal and would prefer a BLT, “a simple sandwich, made well.”

Although I’d most likely pick a sandwich with a little more meat and girth as my last dish, I still have to acknowledge Hosea for even mentioning a BLT. Well played.

I’ll admit right now that I am a huge fan of Lost and have been eagerly awaiting the premiere since last spring. Last night’s 2-hour episode started the season off right but there is one part that got me particularly excited: the scene where Hurley’s dad makes a sandwich.

For those who don’t watch, Hurley Reyes (played by Jorge Garcia) and his mother are flushed with a ton of cash after winning the lottery. Upon learning about the winnings, Hurley’s father David (played by Cheech Marin) returns after abruptly bailing out on the family 17 years ago. As shown last night, David Reyes has become quite comfortable with the lavish life as he makes a salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato and wait for it… caviar sandwich on a kaiser roll.

I’m really not too sure how I feel about fish eggs and cured pork together in a sandwich but you’ve got to try it before you knock it. Just don’t forget to wash it down with a Reyes family favorite – Jarritos, the fruit-flavored Mexican soft drink.
