You look at the common man, the everyday man, who wakes up at 7am and goes to work at his common job, surrounded by the normal life and it is comforting to know the average man is doing his thing in the world. When you see a movie star or a big time politician in the paper or on TV, you don’t usually thin k of them as being part of the same world that we all live in but every now and then you are reminded that we all suffer from the same human condition.  This is why when I found out that I needed brain surgery; I was amazed to discover that a lot of famous people have had brain surgery too.

Last year I was suffering from some harsh back pain, so went to see the doctor, thinking I was probably going to need a surgery on my back. As it turns out, after many tests were done, the problem was actually in my brain and I was sent to see a neurosurgeon. It all happened so fast, it was amazing to think back to the moment. After a lot of examines, my doctor told me that I was going to have to have brain surgery. Custom window treatments in our new house

One of the things that I am the most excited about doing in our new house is getting the custom window treatments that I have always wanted. I love to look at examples for what you can do with windows when ever we go to home shows or on the home tours. It is just one of the things that I love about houses, that you can spruce up and decorate your windows. I’m not much for putting decorations on the front door during the holidays, but I love to look in windows of the houses in my neighborhood when I drive by at Christmas and see the trees and the lights that everyone has up. I also love to see how people decorate their windows. It’s like adding that little extra bit to the front of your home, that you can enjoy from the inside and from the outside, because that is what you can do when you really focus on what is going to be hanging in your windows, or what is going to be view-able through your windows. custom window treatmentsThere are of course other things that I am excited about, I really do like decorating new spaces and our new home is going to be perfect for that. But I’m still trying to gather ideas and figure out exactly what I want the space to look like and what parts of our family I want it to reflect. There are several other things that we could be working on, and that we certainly will be working on in the future, but right now we are going to let some of that go and just work on the windows and the way that I want them to look. The decorations that go over the windows, I suppose they are called window coverings, are going to really dictate the rest of the decorations in the house, and the colors and such. So we are going to need to be sure that we get it right the first time, the colors and the style, because the rest of everything we do in decorating the new space is going to flow from that. I even want the front door to match what I do throughout the house, so we need to be careful about how we proceed and what we choose. It will be fun, as long as I know that we have gotten the colors and style that we want correct in the first place.

Do you remember the first plane flight that you’ve ever been on? I do, and it was an absolutely awesome experience that I’ll never forget, unless I get Alzheimer disease or dementia later in life. I never had any fear of flying ever, and from some stories I’ve heard from people who were or are, I considered myself to be quite fortunate. I recall the captain coming on the intercom and telling us about the weather, how the skies looked and what our flight time was looking like. I decided right there and then, I wanted to be the man on the intercom talking to all of the passengers before I flew them to their destination. There’s never been any doubt in my mind ever since, that I wanted to be a commercial airline pilot. When I was growing up, instead of playing with legos and hot wheels, I liked to put together model airplanes. When I got a little older, I got into flying remote control planes and I still enjoy doing that even to this day. I didn’t just want to fly, I wanted to understand the design principles and the mechanics behind it all, so I started with remote control planes. It was an expensive hobby at first because when you crashed your plane, it was almost always damaged to the point where you couldn’t fly it again until you fixed it. I’ve ordered so many model airplane parts that I’ve lost count but installing the new parts and fixing the engine issues when they came up, really helped to further stimulate my interest and understanding of flying. By the time I was ready to graduate high school, I was under a lot of pressure from my parents to go to college, I didn’t want to let them down but I was hell bent on becoming a pilot as quickly as possible. I wanted to go to flight airline trainingflight airline training school instead of college and I was surprised that I wasn’t getting more support from my parents. I guess that they felt that I was obsessed with flying and that college would open my mind up to different possibilities in life, but what they didn’t understand was that I wouldn’t be happy unless I pursued my path. Initially, I started some initial flight training at a local aviation school doing classwork and flying in the simulator. When I ran out of money and couldn’t afford to go anymore, my parents saw how truly dedicated I was and then decided to start helping me out a little bit. They probably figured that when they were retired, they’d want to travel the world and having a son in the airline industry would be quite beneficial. I went on to get the 500 hours of flight time that I needed to qualify to take a A320 type rating course. This was going to certify me to fly five different kinds of medium- sized aircraft and would give me a good foundation to begin my career, then I’d move onto to get my 737 type rating.

Baby-proofing means fixing lots of little things like the window treatments

It is surprising sometimes just how many things that you have to change around the house in order to make it safe for kids. I know that kids have the habit of putting everything that they can get their hands on in their mouth and that once they are mobil there is nothing that is off bounds for them. After reading a bunch of how to child proof your home books and blogs and whatever else though I am almost in full freak out mode about how many things in my home can be huge hazards for the little things. At this point we have about three months before we actually have a little thing rolling around the carpets and then even after that it will be a number of months until little he or she can actually move around the house at all but I would rather start now and start to be even moderately prepared for what is to come.

window coveringI have started to make a list of all of the things that I had not really expected or anticipated. The thing I am working on right now is trying to figure out how to get all of the chords from the blinds and shades in the house up and hung on something so that the chords do not end up somehow dangling in the reach of little hands. Not only are the little plastic pieces on the ends of the blinds and shades a chocking hazard but probably more so, if by any chance the kid is able to pull the shades in just the right way it could mean the whole thing coming down on top of them. Even if it is just the pieces of the shades that are supposed to come down, it can come down quick and heavy. Thankfully since about half of the window treatments in the downstairs area are those fancy Hunter Douglas blinds that I got from Rockland Window covering that do not have the hanging down chords I only have to worry about a few of the window treatments around the house. I think that the ones downstairs are probably going to be the most important though since that is probably where the baby is going to be most of the time especially once he or she becomes mobile. I can deal with the upstairs window treatments later though. For now between getting the window coverings figure out downstairs plus the billions of other things that I have to do around the house to get ready for this baby I have plenty of things on my plate already and do not need to bother and worry too much about getting too ahead of myself about this whole thing. I knew that having a baby, especially our first one, was going to be an incredibly amount of work and stress but having to deal with all of these things plus a tornado of hormones is really adding up to be too much for me to handle right now.
