Summer is hot dog season in the United States, and according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, we will consume over seven billion (or 818 per second) frankfurters between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Although we love a simple, Kosher, all beef dog with mustard and/or ketchup, we are always looking for new ways to spice up the average wiener.

Bon Appetit has answered our calls with their global hot dog guide. Cleverly named Around The World In 80 Dogs, the magazine has taken ingredients and specialties from around the world and incorporated them into some delicious looking dogs. Some of our personal favorites include the So Cal (buratta cheese, heirloom tomatoes, roasted beets, balsamic reduction), Breakfast Burrito (chorizo, scrambled eggs, hot sauce), Spanish (Manchego cheese, garlic, red pepper relish) and Peking (hoisin sauce and green onions). We were surprised that among the usual suspects, including the Coney Island (chili, onions, mustard) and New Yorker (spicy mustard, sauerkraut) the Chicago Dog was completely omitted, nowhere to be found.

How do you like your dog? Plain and simple, or do you find that you must try some of Bon Appetit’s recommendations? Let us know in the comments.

I appreciate an exceptional 'Dog' as much as the next person, and have to say that the 'Hawaiian' combination looks delicious (love the combination of fruit and meat), I have to say that nothing really compares to a “traditional”, Kosher beef dog, w/ Heinz ketchup, Dijon mustard (could substitute French's Yellow: here) and some fresh relish. That to me, on a warm summer morning/afternoon/evening, (possibly with a few cold beers) cannot be topped.
