Every day in the Philadelphia region, food pantries struggle to feed the growing number of families and seniors who turn to them for help. Local food pantries have seen a 33 percent increase in demand over the past year, while their costs have risen 20 percent due to rising food prices and fewer donations. “Because of the recession, people who never imagined they’d need help are turning to food pantries, but these programs are running out of resources to help them,” said Carey Morgan, Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. “
To ensure that these vital programs can continue serving their communities, Stroehmann, along with retail partners ACME Markets and Giant Food Stores, will donate 10 cents for every purchase of Stroehmann King and Stroehmann Dutch Country bread at ACME Markets (from October 9th to November 5th) and at Giant Food Stores (from October 11th to November 7th) to support the Coalition Against Hunger’s new Victory in Partnership (VIP) Project. The VIP Project aims to bring more resources to food pantries and soup kitchens through new technology, tools and regional networks, so neighboring programs can work together to fight hunger in their communities. In addition, select ACME Market locations will host food drives to benefit food pantries in their neighborhoods.

Editor’s note: Sandwiches are a very cost-effective mechanism to feed hungry families. Stroehmann Bakeries, ACME, Giant, and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger are doing important work for the community and Unbreaded is proud to support their efforts.
Stroehmann Bakeries was also a generous contributor to our Sandwiches Fight Hunger campaign, part of Sandwich Smash 2009.
